Customizing Trims and Packaging
1. Trims and Components Library
The Trims/Components Library contains Example Trims/Components. These are representative of common trims in apparel, home textiles, and footwear. The impact of a trim/component selection includes the impacts of all of the materials used in the trim, inclusive of the defect rate and net use efficiency. More can be read about this in the Creating Customized Trims/Components and Packaging section.
Since trims/components vary in size, impacts will be different based on materials selected and the weights of the parts. The following Example Trims/Components are available:
- 12 mm button/snap button-Aluminum is modeled using default aluminum metal weighing 1.83 grams.
- 12 mm button/snap button-Brass is modeled using default brass metal weighing 1.83 grams.
- 12 mm button/snap button-Nylon is modeled using default nylon plastic weighing 0.31 grams.
- 12mm button/snap button – Polyester is modeled using default polyester plastic weighing 0.31 grams.
- 25 mm button/snap button-Aluminum is modeled using default aluminum metal weighing 10.96 grams.
- 25 mm button/snap button-Brass is modeled using default brass metal weighing 10.96 grams.
- 25 mm button/snap button-Nylon is modeled using default nylon plastic weighing 1.83 grams.
- 25mm button/snap button – Polyester is modeled using default polyester plastic weighing 1.83 grams.
- Buckle/ring-PE is modeled using default polyethylene plastic weighing 1.67 grams.

2. Packaging Library
The Packaging Library contains Example Packaging Materials. These materials are representative of common packaging materials and forms in apparel, home textiles, and footwear. The impact of a packaging selection includes all of the impacts of all of the materials, inclusive of the defect rate and net use efficiency. More can be read about this in the Creating Customized Trims/Components and Packaging section.
Since packaging materials vary in size, impacts will be different based on materials selected and the weights of the parts. The following example packaging materials are available:
- Bag (e-commerce/shipping) is modeled using default polyethylene plastic weighing 150 grams.
- Bubble Wrap is modeled using default polyethylene plastic weighing 59.5 grams.
- Wool/Steel Hanger is modeled using 20 grams of default steel metal and 200 grams of default wood material.
- Wool/Steel Hanger for pants is modeled using 20 grams of default steel metal and 130 grams of default wood material.
- Steel hanger is modeled using 20 grams of default steel material.
- Small Plastic Shopping Bag is modeled using default polyethylene plastic weighing 33 grams.
- Medium Plastic Shopping Bag is modeled using default polyethylene plastic weighing 54 grams.
- Large Plastic Shopping Bag is modeled using default polyethylene plastic weighing 70 grams.
- Shoe sticks (pair) is modeled using default polypropylene plastic weighing 12 grams.
- Polypropylene Shoe hanger is modeled using default polypropylene plastic weighing 8.5 grams.
- Polypropylene Hanger is modeled using default polypropylene plastic weighing 50 grams.
- Polystyrene Hanger is modeled using default polystyrene plastic weighing 35 grams.
- Small Hangtag is modeled using 0.03 grams of default polyester plastic and 0.07 grams of default paper material.
- Large Hangtag is modeled using default is modeled using 0.03 grams of default polyester plastic and 5.67 grams of default paper material.
- Polyester Shoebox Rope is modeled using default polyester fabric weighing 2 grams.
- Garment cover (short) is modeled using default nylon fabric weighing 50 grams.
- Polypropylene Shoebox Rope is modeled using default polypropylene fabric weighing 2 grams.
- Small Paper Shopping Bag is modeled using default paper material weighing 34.02 grams.
- Large Paper Shopping Bag is modeled using default paper material weighing 99.22 grams.
- Tissue Paper is modeled using default paper material weighing 8 grams.
- Toe Stuffing (pair) is modeled using default paper material weighing 30 grams.
- Shoebox (Men’s)is modeled using default cardboard material weighing 277 grams.
- Shoebox (Women’s) is modeled using default cardboard material weighing 253 grams.
- Shoebox (Youth) is modeled using default cardboard material weighing 227 grams.
- Shipping box is modeled using default cardboard material weighing 400 grams.
- Foot Form (pair) is modeled using default cardboard material weighing 22.27 grams.
- Cardboard Shoe hanger is modeled using default cardboard material weighing 19.84 grams
3. Creating Customized Trims/Components and Packaging
Customized Trims/Components and Packaging can be created in the Higg MSI. Both categories follow the same workflow; the main difference is that Custom Trims go into the Trims/Components Library, while Custom Packaging goes into the Packaging Library.
Create Custom Packaging or Custom Trims/Components
The initial setup page for customizing packaging or trims/components requires a unique name for the Custom Trim/Component or Packaging. Optional Vendor, Part Number, and Description fields are available, along with the ability to upload an image.
The setup page also includes a field called “Defects.” This is the assumed defect rate of making the trim and/or packaging. The defect rate is reported as a percentage and is the average number of defective parts per one hundred parts manufactured. The default defect rate is set at 1%. If the defect rate is known, this field can be updated.
Acceptance Quality Levels (AQL) can be used to set the defect rate. For instance, if the part is being manufactured to AQL 2.5, the defect rate should be increased to 2.5%. If an AQL level of 0.65 is being used, the defect rate should be set to 0.65%.
Add Materials
After clicking “Next,”materials can be selected from among Example Materials, Acquired Materials, or Custom Materials. Materials that are saved as drafts are not available to be added and should be saved as final before being used.
Selecting a material adds it as a constituent part of the trim/component or packaging. For each material that is selected, the net amount of material that is part of the final component must be specified. For instance, if a nylon buckle weighs 10 grams, then nylon plastic would be selected as a material and 10 grams would be added for the amount.
The Net Use field is the use efficiency between the gross and net yield. For instance, if the Net Use is 50%, it means that for every 100 grams of input material, only 50 grams are part of the final Trim or Packaging. If the field is 100% it means that there are no material losses (100% of the input materials are used in the output of the trim/component or packaging). The default efficiency is 75% and should not be changed unless the net use efficiency is known.
If creating Custom Trims/Components or Packaging from a Bill of Materials that is reported in gross use rather than net use, then the Net Use field can be specified as 100%. However, the weight of the Custom Trim or Packaging will show as the gross weight. The best option in this case is to weigh the final component and enter the net use, customizing the net use field to match to the gross consumption.
